Michael Baker is actively seeking an Intern for the Emergency Management and Response group of the Alexandria, Virginia office. As a part this group, the highly motivated Water Resources-Data Science intern will join our cooperative team that concentrates on coastal engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, and data science. The intern will be involved in a variety of water resources projects, with an emphasis on 2D H&H Modeling, Coastal Modeling, and GIS, all powered by data science, advanced analytics, and machine learning. Their proficiency in water resources, GIS, and data analytics will be utilized to deliver solutions in the area of flood risk assessment and management. Responsibilities may include:

Apply data science and analytics techniques to extract insights from large datasets.
Assist in the development and implementation of 2D H&H and Coastal Models.
Analyze and model flood risk data using GIS tools.
Experience running 2D models on High Performance Computing (HPC) Linux Machines
Develop and implement machine learning algorithms to solve complex problems.
Build data automation scripts and UI/UX for inhouse data processing scripts.
Collaborate with the Modeling and Data Solutions (MIDAS) and Data Analytics and Automation (DAA) teams to design and implement end-to-end data pipelines.
Present findings to team members in a clear and actionable manner.
Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to translate data into actionable insights for risk managers, policymakers, and financial institutions.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Civil Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
Knowledge of 2D Hydrology and Hydraulics Modeling Software (HEC-suite) and Coastal Modeling tools.
Experience with GIS tools such as ESRI ArcMap, ArcPro and Open-source GIS such as QGIS, GeoPandas, GDAL.
Experience with cloud platforms like AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda) for data management and computation.
Strong understanding of data science principles and analytics.
Proficiency in Python or R, and familiarity with data science libraries such as pandas, NumPy, Xarray and scikit-learn.
Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a team environment.
PREFERRED
Background in climate science, data analytics, water resources management, or related fields.
Strong familiarity with geospatial data analysis, including raster and vector data manipulation.
Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Plotly, Seaborn, Tableau) and dashboard development.
Knowledge of machine learning and computer vision techniques and algorithms.
Ability to adapt quickly to evolving project requirements and thrive in a collaborative environment.
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $15 to $30/hr. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
