About the role: The Baltimore Banner is looking for a curious and creative Data Journalism Intern for Fall 2024. We are looking for an innovative thinker who can wrangle data into stories, charts, and interactive features and experiment with new technologies and trends. This part-time, paid position will work as part of our award-winning data team to make sense of Maryland through the analysis of data. The intern will be expected to identify trends and report their own stories as well as work with other reporters in the newsroom as part of larger projects. We are open to many different types of data expertise. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for their work and have a clear vision for what they hope to accomplish in this temporary position. Journalism experience is a big plus but not a requirement. This internship runs for a period of 10 weeks, commencing in late August or early September and concluding prior to the end of the fall semester. This position is open to current students or recent graduates. Responsibilities: Collaborate with newsroom reporters and other data journalists to tell compelling stories, create data visualizations and/or create news applications Pitch and execute data analyses in support of breaking and investigative news stories and visualizations Acquire data through multiple means, including public records requests, scraping and begging Requirements: Experience working on a data project in a newsroom or as part of an academic or research-oriented project Ability to analyze data using tools like Python, R or SQL Ability to do traditional reporting like make phone calls and conduct interviews Ability to create data visualizations with a grammar of graphing software Detail-orientated, inquisitive nature, and devoted to learning and development Teamwork and willingness to collaborate with others Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to give and receive constructive feedback A commitment to upholding journalist values and ethics
